The nature and purposes of research in the creative media industries

Primary research is used in the film and TV industry by having and conducting interviews with one to one or they can have interviews with multiple people to make it a lot more open and understand people views, having questionnaire for the public to fill in to give the production data relevant toward the subject that they are collecting for.

Secondary Research is used by the Film and TV industry especially when it is a period drama because the only information they would be able to collect is secondary data because it would be impossible to conduct any primary research. For period dramas they are based off famous event/people and some people for example Anne Frank there is a movie called ‘Anne Frank: The Whole Story’ which is based on Anne Frank’s diary and her diary is considered a secondary source.

In the film and Tv Quantitative research is used to give the production a source of primary research which will allow them to have current data and information which is closely linked toward the subject that they are researching. They use test screening as a source of data collection to gain stronger sources of information.

Qualitative research is a method of research in the film and tv industry because it allows them to see and understand what is current in society and what is current. It allows the industry to understand the trends and what is and isn’t current, being able to understand the trends.

Production research is the information which informs the production about the characteristics of that production. It also allows it to focus in on the production. It also allows the production to see if their content can be used for advertisement or if there is other ways of spreading the production.

Audience and market Research are used by the film and TV industry because it allows them to know what their primary target audience is and having this data will allow them to adapt their production to fit that target audience. For example A lot of Disney productions are aimed a 5-15 so their content can’t contain violence or scene that may upset them.

Here are some examples of primary research which I have conducted for previous projects.
