Battle Royale

Battle Royale is about a class of students are taken to the Battle Royale which is a competition which they are forced to take part in where they have to kill each other within three days. The last person standing wins and get to keep their life but if multiple people are still alive by the end of the three days the bands around their necks will explode killing them all so nobody survives. We follow Shuya and Noriko who stay with each other and try to survive. They meet people on the way who either want to help or to kill them. We also see the deaths of their fellow classmates and how they met their end. Their old teacher who is in charge we see and find out why he is doing this and see why Noriko Nakagawa was his favourite student. We see the consequences of Noriko and Shuya winning the Battle Royale. One game, many deaths but someone has to survive. The main characters are Shuya Nanahara, Noriko Nakagawa, Shogo Kawada, Kazuo kiriyama and Kitano. Shuya Nanahara he is approximately 14-15 years old. His role is the main character that we follow throughout the film. His dramatic motivation is to survive because he is in love with Noriko Nakagawa and want to protect and be with her. Noriko Nakagawa she is approximately 14-15 years old. She is joint main character with Shuya Nanahara, her role is to survive but also to protect Shuya. Her motive was to survive and to keep Noriko alive. Shogo Kawada is approximately 18 years old. His role in the story was to protect and keep Noriko and Shuya alive to get them off the island. His motive was to understand what Keiko’s (His previous lover that died in the game) last smile was about. Kazuo Kiriyama is approximately 18 years old. His role in the movie was to kill everyone so that he could win and live. His motive was to be last survivor and to win the game. Kitano is approximately 53 years old. His role was the teacher and the administrator of the Battle Royale programme. His motivation was to have a better relationship with his daughter. The genre of Battle Royale is thriller and a drama, examples of the movie being shown as a thriller is that a lot of characters are killed without out a backup story or a leading film to their deaths. It will just pop up some different characters and show them killing each other. It is also a drama because there are parts of the movie which is just interaction between characters without any action happening in that scene with them or another character coming into shot to kill them. In the beginning of the movie we are greeted with some text explaining what the Battle Royale is and then it cuts to the previous years winner. Then we meet the class that would be later included into the Battle Royale. You can apply the classical hollywood narrative to Battle Royale within this section because Kitano is stabbed by one of the students which has consequence for the student later down the line The middle includes all the killing of most of the students in that class which we follow. They are fighting each other to the death to survive and be the last person standing to win the game. In end we see Noriko, Shuya and Shogo escaping the island on a boat. Shogo sadly succumbed to his injuries and passes away on the boat. We are left with the wanted murderers posters of Noriko and Shuya as they are running away. The movie differs from typical western films because it is over dramatic in the gore and that character can get shot multiple times and still be alive. It’s very over the top compared and the storyline isn’t realistic, there isn't a lot of character development within the characters we barely know anything about the main characters just some small details. The have such a large group of characters that they don’t have time to develop the main characters. Which compared to the typical western movie they will have small group of characters that they want to focus on and there will be development of those characters so we understand why they are like this or how they got to that position. Also there isn’t a lot of dialog within Battle Royale a lot of it is through expression and through action.
